Gäubodenvolksfest Straubing 2026 - One of the Largest Volksfests in the German State of Bavaria.
The Gäubodenvolksfest in Straubing is one of the largest Volksfests (beer festival and travelling funfair) in the German state of Bavaria. It is an annual event, spanning eleven days mid-August. The festival is celebrated by the whole city as a "fifth season", and many companies are closed down during this time. It is one of Bavaria's oldest and most popular festivals and it has increased to one of the biggest events in Germany.
Beer plays a central role in the fair. There are also several large beer tents that span a 100,000 m2 area. The beer is specially brewed, and only breweries from Straubing or the district Straubing-Bogen are allowed to serve beer there. The event has maintained the historic character of Bavarian festivals, and attracts approximately 1.4 million visitors every year. Many visitors wear traditional Bavarian clothing (Tracht) for the occasion.
The Gäubodenvolksfest was founded in the year 1812 by Maximilian I Joseph, King of Bavaria, as an agricultural festival to foster an annual gathering of the people in the Danube region. The Gäubodenvolksfest in Straubing has evolved into a major event with unrivaled appeal throughout Bavaria. In 2012, the Gäubodenvolksfest celebrated its 200th anniversary. The festival combines Bavarian tradition with progress and vitality.
The Gäubodenvolksfest is a modern and family-friendly festival with several attractions, including around 130 rides and stall owners provide fun, entertainment, and thrills every year. Over the course of 11 days in August, visitors can enjoy the beer brewed in breweries from Straubing and Straubing-Bogen and served in seven beer tents, each offering traditional German delicacies and attractive music program.
On the first day of the festival there is a "Bierprobe", which means "beer tasting," followed by a parade consisting of people wearing Bavarian native attire walking on foot, riding horses or in horse carriages. On the second day there is the official opening with a representative of the Bavarian or German government. Many attractions and plenty of exciting experiences are also available at the Gäubodenvolksfest, including special offers for children. In addition, all shops offer reduced prices on children's and family afternoons.
The lantern parade with torchlit floats and low-level fireworks on the Danube delights locals and visitors alike every year! Daily, the live spectacle in the historic area offers a colorful program for all ages. Combined with the Gäubodenvolksfest, the East Bavaria Show (Ostbayernschau) takes place on the Hagen hill in Straubing. This "Lower Bavarian World Exhibition" is one of Germany's most popular consumer exhibitions.
