Humayun’s Tomb Delhi - The First Mughal Style Architecture in Indian Continent.

The Humayun’s Tomb which is located conveniently at the banks of Yamuna River is a brilliant architectural splendor of the Mughal period. The Mausoleum is basically a tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun which was built in the 1560s by Humayun’s eldest wife Bega Begum after 14 years his death. The Tomb, has particular cultural significance as it was the first garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent and Today the tomb is a major attraction among the tourists visiting Delhi. Humayun's tomb has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993 which further adds on to importance of this impressive structure of red sandstone. Humayun’s tomb is the first structure in India that was built in the Mughal style of architecture. It inspired several important architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal. The architect was Mirak Mirza Ghiyath. Persian and Indian craftsmen worked together to build the garden-tomb, far grander than any tomb built before in the Islamic world. Humayun’s garden-tomb is also called the ‘dormitory of the Mughals’ as in the cells are buried over 150 Mughal family members.

The tomb itself is in the center of a large garden, designed in the char baah (four fold) style, with ponds linked by canals. The main entrance is on the south side and there is another entrance on the west side. A pavilion and a bath are located in the center of the eastern and northern walls respectively. The mausoleum itself stands on a high, wide terraced platform with two bay deep vaulted cells on all four sides. It has an irregular octagon plan with four long sides and chamfered edges. It is surmounted by a 42.5 m high double dome clad with marble flanked by pillared kiosks (chhatris) and the domes of the central chhatris are adorned with glazed ceramic tiles. The middle of each side is deeply recessed by large arched vaults with a series of smaller ones set into the facade. The interior is a large octagonal chamber with vaulted roof compartments interconnected by galleries or corridors. This octagonal plan is repeated on the second storey. The structure is of dressed stone clad in red sandstone with white and black inlaid marble borders.

There are many prominent buildings inside the Humayun’s tomb complex consisting of tombs, mosques along with an accommodation. Arab Sarai, Nila Guband and Bu Halima are a few of the buildings worth noticing. There are around 150 tombs in the entire Humayun’s tomb complex, while the tombs of Bega Begum, Hamida Banu Begum, Dara Shikoh and Isa Khan are situated within the main complex of the tomb. All of these attributes fully convey the outstanding universal value of the property. The tomb’s in the complex have been respected throughout their history and so have retained original form and purpose in. Flowing water was an essential element of the Mughal char-bagh and at Humayun’s Tomb, underground terracotta pipes, aqueducts, fountains, water channels were some of the elements of the gardens. Since the time of inscription, major conservation works have been based on exhaustive archaeological investigation, archival research and documentation, were undertaken on the garden by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
