Awantiswami Temple Awantipora - Ruins of Famous Hindu Temples Built By Utpala Dynasty King.

The Avantiswami Temple is a ancient Hindu temple located on the banks of the river Jhelum in Awantipora, Jammu and Kashmir. Its complex consisted of two temples, the Avantiswami Temple dedicated to Vishnu and the Avantishwara Temple dedicated to Shiva. Locals call the temples Pandav Lari, meaning "house of the Pandavas". The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple was built by king Awantivarman the founder of Avantipur and of the Utpala dynasty in the 9th century CE. Originally known as Viswasara, the ancient town was also a capital city. Utpala dynasty was a Kashmiri dynasty which ruled over the Kashmir region in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent from 8th to 10th century CE. He had built many Hindu temples in Kashmir during his reign, which were largely destroyed due to Muslim conquests. During the reign of Avantivarman, the region prospered. The Avantiswami Temple is an example of the stone temple architecture of Kashmir during that era.

Located in the southeast of Srinagar, on the banks of the river Jhelum, Avantiswami Temple Presently, it is totally dilapidated and lying in the crumbles. According to the beliefs, the temple was inspired by the Gandharva style. Numerous coins made up of copper were excavated from the site after excavation in the early twentieth century. And, they belonged to Shah Miri dynasty and Durrani Afgan rulers. Talking about its architecture, the temple is nestled in the centre of an oblong courtyard built on a double base and surrounded by four shrines at the corners. Also, one can see a pillared Mandapa in front of the staircase belonging to the main shrine. According to the sayings, the temple has gone 20 ft down the earth during the course of time. At present, the apex of the temple is only visible. Even the edifice that is visible to us gives ample clues about the excellent carvings and sculptures of that time. The bases of the temple are still intact. However, the sanctum and the original magnificence of the temple have been lost.
