Bandhavgarh National Park - Major Destination for the Tiger Reserve.

 
Bandhavgarh National Park is the most visited and famed tiger palace in Madhya Pradesh located in the Vindhya Hills of Umaria district. The park is recognized as one of the major destination for the tiger reserve. Bandhavgarh, with an area of 105 square kilometres (41 sq mi), was declared a national park in 1968 and then became Tiger Reserve in 1993. The current core area is spread over 716 square kilometres (276 sq mi). Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa captured the first white tiger in this region in 1951.
 

Wildlife in Bandhavgarh National Park

Once a hunting ground of maharajas, Bandhavgarh is now Bandhavgarh National Park and home to the royal Bengal tiger, 37 other species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 80 species of butterflies. The park has a large breeding population of leopards, and various species of deer. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh is the place to visit if you want to spot the big cat. India's top dwelling for tigers, it has the highest density of Royal Bengal tigers in the world. All the white tigers of the world trace their roots to Bandhavgarh National Park.
 
 
The reserve is also densely populated with other species like sambar and barking deer are a common sight and nilgai are to be seen in the open areas of the park. There have been reports of the Indian wolf, striped hyena and the caracal the latter being an open country dweller. The tiger reserve abounds with chital or the spotted deer which is the main prey animal of the tiger and the Indian leopard. The Indian bison were reintroduced from Kanha.

Legends of Bandhavgarh

The Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has great connection with ancient legends and beliefs and the name also has ancient values with Ramayana, an old epic from Treta Yuga. Bandhavgarh dates back to 2000 years ago. The Bandhavgarh fort is scripted with many convincing evidences of human activities and architectural techniques. Interestingly you will find there several man made fort, gufa, statue and caves with inscriptions and rock paintings.
 
Bandhavgarh Fort: Tourists can see the magnificent site on the top of the highest plateau from the tiger tours of the park. The word Bandhavgarh is a concoction of two words: Bandhav & Garh where 'Bandhav' means brother and 'Garh' means Fort. So the meaning of Bandhavgarh is brother's fort. It is said that Lord Rama gifted this fort to his younger brother Lakshmana after returning from Lanka.
 
 
Badi Gufa: One of the biggest caves in the Bandhavgarh National Park, Badi Gufa dates back to the 10th century. Carved out of solid sandstone rock, these caves served as shelter for the army of the king during the medieval period.
 
 
Sheesh Shaiya: Bandhavgarh holds a rich blend of cultural and natural heritage. Beyond tigers, the place is also known for its rare statue of reclining Vishnu from the 10th century situated inside the national park. The spot can be reached via jeep safari in Tala zone.
 
 
Three Cave Point: The Three Cave Point is one of the most mesmerizing spots in the Bandhavgarh National Park. This beautiful point has magnificent carvings and is home to leopards, tigers and sloth bears.
