RBI Monetary Museum is a museum in Fort, Mumbai that covers the evolution of money in India. Inside the premises from the earliest barter system and the use of cowries to coins, paper money, stock markets and modern-day electronic transactions have been exhibited here. The museum also holds fascinating quizzes and slideshows for children.
The museum was established under the educational programme by Reserve Bank of India in 2004 and was inaugurated by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the then President of India. It was the first museum in the country devoted to economic history and numismatics.
The collection of RBI Monetary Museum divided into six sections, has about 1,500 objects that include coins dating back to 6th-century BCE, Indus Valley, the Kushana Empire, the Gupta period. There are various galleries in the museum where paper currency, financial instruments and other interactive exhibits. This section tells about how currency is managed in India and how its has evolved over the years from the barter system to coins to notes.
A walk through the galleries of this museum gives tourists an idea about the history of money in India and world. For the better understanding of the exhibits, special kiosks are installed in the museum that facilitates the information in an interesting way. Visitors can also visit the shop in the museum to buy souvenirs like posters on currency and coins, greeting cards, and postcards.
