Thalaiyar Waterfalls - Highest Waterfall in Tamil Nadu

 
Thalaiyar Falls is a waterfall located in the Palani Hills Dindigul District. It is 975 ft (297 m) tall and is the highest waterfall in the state of Tamil Nadu which flows as Manjalar River one of the tributories of Vaigai river. Thalaiyar Falls as a thin silver strip of water freefalling with the lush green mountains and dark rocks making for a scenic backdrop. Thalaiyar Falls also known as Rat Tail Falls, when looking the falls seems like the tail of a rat, long and thin. It is the sixth highest waterfall in India and the 267th highest in the world.
 
Thalaiyar Falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no road to it. The top of the falls is a rewarding and challenging trekking and hiking destination. Hikers should be cautious, as two Western tourists died in 2006 when they fell from the top of the Falls.
 
Take a hike to the base of the falls. It is possible to hike to the bottom of the falls in the dry season, beginning at the Manjalar Dam. This difficult hike proceeds along a path through Mango, orchards and potato fields around the Manjalar Reservoir and up along the stream as far as a small shrine, dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshi. The legend is that Kamakshi was born here at the foot of the falls in a bamboo bush and hence she is called Moonkilanai Kamakshi. This place is called Amma Machhu. Not only is the hike quite scenic and beautiful, it is also very adventurous.
 
Visitors can also enjoy the beauty of the falls from the roadside benches, simply soaking in the great atmosphere. Moreover, there are two walls here on the falls, where a huge flat rock rests below one of them. Tourists can get down to the rock’s edge and get a great look of the river at the bottom which flows silently into the woods. The falls also serves as a watering hole, attracting many animals for drinking water.

The best time to visit Thalaiyar Falls is from October to March during the winter, early months of spring and then between July and early September during the monsoon season. During this time the water levels of Thalaiyar Falls enjoyable and the weather being very favourable to pay a visit to this majestic attraction.

The distance between Kodaikanal Bus Stand and Thalaiyar Falls is around 20 kilometres, which will usually take you somewhere around 48 to 60 minutes to cover the entire distance. The best way to reach Thalaiyar Falls from Kodaikanal Bus Stand is to either rent a private car or hire a taxi, which is also the fastest alternative. However, a cheaper alternative is to take the many tourist or state buses which can take you to the falls. This route will also take a lot more time due to its long route.
