Dauji Temple Mathura - Ancient Hindu Temple Dedicated to Lord Balarama.

 

Dauji Temple is one of the most revered temples of the country which is rooted in Hindu mythology and stores high cultural significance is built in typical Indian architectural style. About 18 kilometres from Mathura the temple has stood for over 5000 years since 1535 AD and is one of the oldest temples in the city. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Balarama, who was the elder sibling of Lord Krishna.

 

Dauji Temple holds immense religious and cultural significance for devotees, especially among followers of Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama. The Dauji Temple complex includes several buildings, including the main temple. The temple is famous for its traditional Indian style unique architecture. The main temple has a beautiful marble facade intricate carvings and decorations. It has three doors on three sides each of which gives access to the calla, one of which is surmounted by a squat pyramidal tower. Inside the main sanctum, the walls display beautiful artworks as well as decorated idols of Lord Balarama and his wife, Revati.

 

Dauji Temple complex has an adjoining court, where there is a small vaulted chamber believed to be the residence to the God post his epiphany. Each court or Kunj bears the name of its founder. The Kshir Sagar or Sea of Milk is a tank built of bricks, spread over 80 years square.

 

 

Huranga or Holi at Dauji Temple is one the last prominent Holi celebrations around Mathura and its possibly one of the most fun one as well. The tradition of Holi here is dates back to about 500 years when the Dauji Maharaja Temple was set up in this village.

 

The tradition of playing Holi is also unique here. In fact its not called Holi, but Huranga - which means a much more aggressive form of Holi! And interestingly, all the aggression is shown by the women on men, with men simply saving themselves from the rather violent womenfolk.

 

The theme basically comes from the Rasleela of Radha-Krishna when they used to play Holi during their days. Krishna and friends would tease the young girls and they would get upset and beat them up!

 

 

The temple is particularly famous for its annual fair, which takes place during August or September, depending on the Hindu calendar. The fair is called Dauji Mela and attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over India. The fair is a celebration of the birth anniversary of Lord Balarama and features cultural performances, music, and various stalls selling local handicrafts and food.

 

Dauji temple is located in Baldev, a town in the Mathura district of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Mathura Junction Railway Station is the nearest railway station and Agra Airport in Agra is the nearest airport to Baldeo Dauji Temple. Mathura is well-connected to various parts of North India by road. You can reach Mathura by private car, taxi or bus. The town of Baldeo, where Dauji Temple is located, is a short drive from Mathura city. You can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw from Mathura to Dauji Temple.
